Summer Reading Program 2013
Program runs July 8 through August 13
The Port Jervis Free Library's annual summer reading program goes underground this year, with themes that encourage children to "Dig Into Reading” and challenge teen's to look "Beneath the Surface.” For kids entering kindergarten through Grade 6. Registration begins June 17. Program runs July 8 through August 13. $2.00 fee per child. Library card required.
Research shows that children can lose as much as three months of academic progress over the summer. Children who read even a little bit every day are more likely to maintain their reading skills and be better prepared to learn when they go back to school in fall. Aside from the educational benefits, there's the opportunity to read something just for fun and have a blast at our special events and activities.
Here are some highlights of the fun that the library has planned this summer:
-
Weekly Hands-on craft activities
-
Stickers
-
Fascinating weekly programs about everything from Fossils to Planting seeds
-
Summer story hours for preschool children
-
Author Visit from Alan Lewis – "I Grew Up on a Farm”
-
Steam Punk Jewelry for Teens
-
Grand Finale event - Dinosaur Safari with Dr. Livingpebble! at the Drew Methodist Church (participants must complete five book reports to attend final program.)
Be sure to check out the Events and Classes to see what we're doing this summer at the Port Jervis Free Library! Join the Summer Reading Club today by visiting the Children's Room.
Get Your New York City Public Library Card
Most people in Orange County may not be aware that anyone who lives, works or goes to school anywhere in New York (yes, anywhere in the state) can get a New York City public library card and download ebooks and audio books from the New York City library system without ever having to step foot in New York City.Simply go to www.nypl.org, click on "Using the Library," and then click on "Get a Library Card." Provide the requested information and within weeks you will be sent your New York City library card. You can then go on the New York Public Library web site and download ebooks and audio books just like you do in our own Ramapo Catskill Library System. Now you have both library systems at your fingertips!
