*Program in the Reference Room*

The Hub is pleased to announce Susan Beecher, Director of the Port Jervis/Deerpark Humane Society, and staff will present a program on August 8th for everyone considering adopting a homeless animal, or volunteering to care for them.

Susan will discuss what it means to be a good pet parent, the costs associated with having a pet, and the importance of pre-selecting a veterinarian.  You will learn how to understand your pet’s actions and be the guidelines for proper pet care.

Although you cannot take one of the pet’s home with you, if while you are there you feel you can make the commitment to be a good pet parent and fall in love with one of the special guests, you may complete an application to start the Shelter’s review process in advance of International Homeless Animal Day.

And even if you are not planning to adopt a pet, come and learn how you can foster a pet, donate to their care, or volunteer your time.

Backyard Series: Make Your Own Beer
Event Location: Community Room
Contact:    845-772-7586

*Program held in the Community Room*

Ale is one of the oldest beverages humans have produced, dating back to at least the 5th millennium BC and recorded in the written history of Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.  Chemical tests of ancient pottery jars reveal that beer was produced about 7,000 years ago in what is today Iran, and was one of the first-known biological engineering tasks where the biological process of fermentation is used in a process.  A 3900-year-old Sumerian poem honoring Ninkasi, the patron goddess of brewing, contains the oldest surviving beer recipe, describing the production of beer from barley via bread.

BUT WE CAN MAKE BEER IN OUR BACKYARD, OR OUR GARGE, OR OUR KITCHEN.

Our much less old presenter, Jim Davis has many of his own recipes and secrets to brewing great beer.  He promises to share some of them with you and give you a taste before and after the beer is fermented.

Presenter:  Jim Davis                                     Charge: Free                                      Must be 21 years old to sample

*Seating is limited, so register today!*

Circle of Writers
Event Location: Story Hour Room - 2nd Floor
Contact:    845-772-7586

*Monthly Program Held on the Third Monday in the Story Hour Room*

This writing workshop is for those who want to share their written work, either as a work-in-progress or as a fully developed piece, in a circle with other writers who understand that a good question will do more to help the writer than any criticism.  After all, would you squash a seedling for not being a plant yet?  After the reading of a piece, the first go-around will be for members of the circle to share with the writer what they think is working; the second go-around will be for the writer to ask his or her own questions – his or her own worries about the piece; the third-go-around will be for members of the circle to ask their own specific questions.  All forms of writing are welcome, i.e. short story, poem, script, essay, performance art piece, letter-to-the-editor, journal entry.  Writing is a solitary job but it can be a joy to share one's work in the fellowship of other writers in an actively supportive environment.

Facilitator:  Mikell Zacharia                                         Charge:  Free

*There are a limited number of seats, so please reserve yours today*

Mikell Zacharia is a full-time writer of poetry, short stories, scripts for stage and screen, who also does performance art pieces and storytelling at open-mics.
