BACKYARD SERIES: CREATING A BEE FRIENDLY GARDEN
Event Location: The Hub
Contact:    845-772-7586

*Program Held in The Hub*

More and more gardeners are anxious to do their part to help our bees by adding to the shrinking inventory of flower-rich habitat in their area. The bee population is struggling. Their evolution has been amazingly similar to our own. Now is the time for us to help them. In return, the bees will pollinate our flowers, providing a bountiful harvest of fruits, vegetables and seeds…plus the joy of watching them up close.

Not all bee pollinators are honey bees. We can combine native flowers that are uniquely adapted to our region to feed our bees and provide habitat for their homes.

Master Gardener Volunteer Cindy Coker will identify the native flowers for our region, disclose which types of flowers to avoid, and reveal the best variety of flowers to plant to provide a full season of food for our hard working bees.

Limited Seating. Pre-registration required.

A CIRCLE OF WRITERS
Event Location: Community Room
Contact:    845-772-7586
*Program Held in the Community Room on First and Third Tuesdays of each month.*
This writing workshop is for those who want to share their written work, either as a work-in-progress or as a fully developed piece, in a circle with other writers who understand that a good question will do more to help the writer than any criticism.  After all, would you squash a seedling for not being a plant yet?  After the reading of a piece, the first go-around will be for members of the circle to share with the writer what they think is working; the second go-around will be for the writer to ask his or her own questions – his or her own worries about the piece; the third-go-around will be for members of the circle to ask their own specific questions.  All forms of writing are welcome, i.e. short story, poem, script, essay, performance art piece, letter-to-the-editor, journal entry.  Writing is a solitary job but it can be a joy to share one's work in the fellowship of other writers in an actively supportive environment.  Facilitator:  Mikell Zacharia        Charge: Free  *It is anticipated this workshop will require approximately 10 registrants to be effective*  Mikell Zacharia is a full-time writer of poetry, short stories, scripts for stage and screen, who also does performance art pieces and storytelling at open-mics.

BACKYARD SERIES: MAKE YOUR OWN MAPLE SYRUP
Event Location: The Hub
Contact:    845-772-7586

*Program Held in The Hub*

This is a class for beginners—for those who want to experiment inexpensively with becoming a "Sugarmaker” -producing maple syrup from the trees in their own yard (or the neighbor’s yard, if they agree). Maple syrup is among the oldest natural food products in North America. Folklore credits the Native American with the discovery of this flavorful natural sweetener. European settlers adopted and refined the practice.

Come to the class and learn from a round-table discussion of Backyard Maple Syrup producers about both early historic equipment and the modern equipment used, as well as where to get it; how to make an inexpensive Sugarhouse, the best trees to tap and how; the methods of boiling the sap into syrup; the multiple uses of maple syrup; and the do’s and don’ts. Come to the class and be rewarded with a taste of the maple sap and maple syrup after it has been boiled. And in the spring, enjoy your own maple syrup.

Limited Seating. Pre-registration required.

Presenters: Cindy Coker and Fred Harding, and Fellow "Sugarmakers”

Louise and Ken Benjamin, and the entertaining Richard Johnson Charge: Free

UNUSUAL CUSTOMS AND STRANGE FOODS
Event Location: The Hub
Contact:    845-772-7586

*Program Held in The Hub*

Each country has its own unusual customs (including ours) and foods considered delicacies that seem strange to others. Most of these strange foods have long histories dating back centuries. The presenter recently spent time in Newfoundland, Iceland, and China, so this program will focus on unusual customs and strange foods of those countries. The foods pictured here and others will be identified, and you may try a small taste of each. The timing of the program allows you to consider these as your hors d’oeuvres (if you dare), prior to having your evening meal.
