Make your own autumn floral decoration.  During this class you will learn to prepare a small pumpkin, fill it with mixed greens – plus discuss freshness and design.  You will also select flowers to fill your pumpkin to capture the beauty of our region’s Fall colors.  Take your arrangement home.  If you have a utility knife and tablespoon, please bring them to class.  All other material will be provided.  Limited to the first 15 to pay for their supplies and register!

World War II Fashions: Fashions of the 1940’s

Elaine DeFeo, a retired fashion designer and teacher, will present a history of WWII fashions for women and men. The program explores the trends that led up to the fashions of the 40's and show how today's styles are still influenced by this pivotal time in fashion history. She explains how clothing was rationed and how scarves were recycled into dresses.Participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at creating their own 40's style creations.

Ladies—this will be especially interesting to you and will be even more fun if you bring a teenager with you.

Women’s Work in WWII

The presentation starts with life in 1939 and what was happening in the world, and then moves forward with the story of WWII and how women changed perspectives and broke down myths one by one. It closes with President Kennedy hosting his President's Commission on the Status of Women.

This welcoming presentation will feature a large collection of WWII posters with 1940's wartime music. It will keep you interested and helps continue the experience.

In the talk, the 77 American nurses captured at Corregidor are discussed. All survived the war and the last survivor passed away last year.

Presenter: John Cilio Charge: Free

John is a skilled historian focused on mid twentieth-century general aviation, military aircraft, and the people that made them possible. His stories (appearing in over 20 publications) are recognized for their excellence in accuracy and authenticity. He has written over 200 articles covering everything from Autogiros, Blimps, Corsairs, Mustangs, and secret B-24 missions to bomb Tokyo to Red Bull Air Race pilots and the stories behind private aircraft and the woman who made them during WWII.

This writing workshop is for those who want to share their written work, either as a work-in-progress or as a fully developed piece, in a circle with other writers who understand that a good question will do more to help the writer than any criticism.  After all, would you squash a seedling for not being a plant yet?  After the reading of a piece, the first go-around will be for members of the circle to share with the writer what they think is working; the second go-around will be for the writer to ask his or her own questions – his or her own worries about the piece; the third-go-around will be for members of the circle to ask their own specific questions.  All forms of writing are welcome, i.e. short story, poem, script, essay, performance art piece, letter-to-the-editor, journal entry.  Writing is a solitary job but it can be a joy to share one's work in the fellowship of other writers in an actively supportive environment.  Facilitator:  Mikell Zacharia        Charge: Free  *It is anticipated this workshop will require approximately 10 registrants to be effective*  Mikell Zacharia is a full-time writer of poetry, short stories, scripts for stage and screen, who also does performance art pieces and storytelling at open-mics.
