BACKYARD SERIES - Autumn Foraging for Mushrooms
Event Location: Community Room
Contact:    845-772-7586
*Program will be held in the Community Room*
As a wild foods enthusiast and quasi-vegetarian, presenter Nathaniel Whitmore delights in variety.  He derives almost all of his nutrition from plant sources, and he believes that his success in doing so is largely due to variety.  There are many forms of plant life found in nature that can be eaten, including grains, beans, nuts,  seeds, buds, flowers, leaves, stalks, shoots, roots, tubers, fruits, berries, seaweeds, fiddle heads, pollen, AND MUSHROOMS.  Quoting Nathaniel, "The various tastes, qualities, and energies found in a diet of diversity make for great health.  So often the stagnation in our bodies and otherwise in our lives is due to a stagnant diet.  It is important to eat a variety of fresh natural foods.  Mushrooms are an important aspect of dietary diversity.  In this sense, as part of a wholesome diet, all edible mushrooms are also medicinal.”
He has experimented with shiitake cultivation for the last few years.  It is very exciting for they use no chemicals (many store-bought mushrooms contain high levels of man-made chemicals) and produce very well.  Another health benefit of mushrooms is that hunting for them requires walking – one of the healthiest habits there is.  Even if you do not find mushrooms during your forays, you will benefit from the exercise, fresh air, and beautiful surroundings.  This program will  focus on MUSHROOMS OF FALL.  Bring your questions.
Presenter: Nathaniel Whitmore        Charge: Free
Nathaniel is available for private tours and for events.  Contact information will be shared at the program.

About the Presenter:  Morning Star Creations is a love affair between husband and wife artists, Jack and Patricia Yelle.  Jack, a retired illustrator and advertising  executive, has been painting and teaching watercolors for over thirty years.  His love of fly fishing brought him to Roscoe, NY where he found the ultimate place of woods and water.  Patricia has enjoyed painting in many media - pastel through acrylics.  Her real love, however, is craft and she has succeeded marvelously in  creating unique designs for the gallery.  Her favorite is working with pressed flowers.  This is a most rewarding art form, as she both grows the various flowers and creates the final designs, which are then framed under glass.

*Community Room on Third Tuesday of October, November, and December*
This writing workshop is for those who want to share their written work, either as a work-in-progress or as a fully developed piece, in a circle with other writers who understand that a good question will do more to help the writer than any criticism.  After all, would you squash a seedling for not being a plant yet?  After the reading of a piece, the first go-around will be for members of the circle to share with the writer what they think is working; the second go-around will be for the writer to ask his or her own questions – his or her own worries about the piece; the third-go-around will be for members of the circle to ask their own specific questions.  All forms of writing are welcome, i.e. short story, poem, script, essay, performance art piece, letter-to-the-editor, journal entry.  Writing is a solitary job but it can be a joy to share one's work in the fellowship of other writers in an actively supportive environment.  Facilitator:  Mikell Zacharia        Charge: Free  *It is anticipated this workshop will require approximately 10 registrants to be effective*  Mikell Zacharia is a full-time writer of poetry, short stories, scripts for stage and screen, who also does performance art pieces and storytelling at open-mics.
