Irish Music Concert - Parting Glass Band

To celebrate all things Irish, the Port Jervis Free Library will present a concert by The Parting Glass Band on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free. The concert features traditional and contemporary Irish music performed by Al Gessner on button accordion, flute, and vocals; Patti Gessner on tin whistle, vocals, and percussion; and Kevin McComb on guitar and vocals. Al Gessner has played with such groups as Green Velvet and The Bearded Lady, and has done many sessions with Jim and Mary Coogen, fellow performers of Irish music. He is the owner of Al’s Music Shop in Port Jervis. A teacher, pianist, and the wife of Al, Patti Gessner has sung Irish music her whole life. McComb works as a brass and string repairman whose roots are in Gospel. He did a stint with various rock bands, including the Irish rock group Emish.

A CIRCLE OF WRITERS

This writing workshop is for those who want to share their written work, either as a work-in-progress or as a fully developed piece, in a circle with other writers who understand that a good question will do more to help the writer than any criticism. After all, would you squash a seedling for not being a plant yet? After the reading of a piece, the first go-around will be for members of the circle to share with the writer what they think is working; the second go-around will be for the writer to ask his or her own questions – his or her own worries about the piece; the third-go-around will be for members of the circle to ask their own specific questions. All forms of writing are welcome, i.e. short story, poem, script, essay, performance art piece, letter-to-the-editor, journal entry. Writing is a solitary job but it can be a joy to share one's work in the fellowship of other writers in an actively supportive environment. Facilitator: Mikell Zacharia Charge: Free *It is anticipated this workshop will require approximately 10 registrants to be effective* Mikell Zacharia is a full-time writer of poetry, short stories, scripts for stage and screen, who also does performance art pieces and storytelling at open-mics.

You will leave the class ready to turn those unused items in the basement or attic into cash.

For the first time, the Port Jervis Free Library is able to offer FREE tax preparation services to  New York residents through the AARP Foundation and the Internal Revenue Service. This program has a particular focus on preparing taxes for those ages 60 and older and low- to moderate-income residents in New York.

Tax-payers are asked to bring the following records to the site:

  • photo identification
  • Social Security card (and cards for any dependents)
  • a copy of last year’s return
  • all tax-related forms received, such as W-2s from each employer, 1099Rs for pension or annuities, Social Security 1099, or other 1099 for interest or dividends
  • unemployment compensation statements
  • state income tax refund statement
  • documentation relating to any tax adjustments or credits you may be entitled to such as tuition statements, child and dependent care expenses, real estate taxes, car excise tax, mortgage interest, charitable donations, home energy efficiency item purchases, and year-end statements from investment accounts

BEER—over the last 2,500 years many TYPES and many STYLES have been developed.And as today’s beer aficionados say, "so many choices, so little time.”The TYPES of beer include Ales, Lagers, Stouts, Porters, and Malts.The STYLES of beer include amber, blonde, brown, clear, dark fruit, golden, honey, India Pale Ale (IPA), light, lime, pale, pilsner, red, and wheat.

How do you know which taste you might like?How do you know which are best at room temperature (as opposed to cold)? How do you know which are best in bottles or drawn from the tap? How do you know what questions to ask the server or inn keeper?After this class and a very small taste, you will have the answers.

This is a new version of a book club forming during February.Each month the group will read the book chosen for the month and meet at a local restaurant to review the "book and the brew.” From time to time, the author will also join the gathering. Pre-registration is required so the proper number of seats can be reserved at the restaurant. The fare at the restaurant will be your choice and your responsibility. Perhaps you will be given the facilitators’ recommendations for best "grub” and a list of tap beverages and wines so you can research them in advance too. The library will stock as many of the books as possible for Library cardholders.Others will have to acquire the book, but you will be guided through the least expensive way to do so.

Come and enjoy a cup of coffee and a treat with some very cute and cuddly adoptable pets.Whether you might be considering adopting a pet or just like friendly dogs, cats, puppies or kittens, you will not want to miss this opportunity.

Susan Beecher, Shelter Director, will reveal the mission of the shelter, the guidelines of proper pet care, how to understand what your pet’s actions mean, and how to adopt a pet. Although you cannot take a pet home with you, if while you are there you feel you can make the commitment to be a good pet parent and fall in love with one of the special guests, you may complete an application to start the Shelter’s review process. There will be a limited number of participants, so register today. However, should the event be oversubscribed, we would welcome the opportunity to have another Dog and Cat Café in April.
