New York Heritage Website

New York Heritage is a research portal for students, educators, historians, genealogists, and anyone else who is interested in learning more about the people, places and institutions of New York State. The site provides free access to more than 160 distinct digital collections, totaling hundreds of thousands of items. The collections in New York Heritage represent a broad range of historical, scholarly, and cultural materials held in libraries, museums, and archives throughout the state. Collection items include photographs, letters, diaries, directories, maps, newspapers, books, and more.

The New York Heritage Digital Collections site has launched its new look this month. Users can now dive into the collections in a variety of tempting ways. This redesign has new ways to show off the amazing materials on New York Heritage, including a rotating slideshow to highlight collections from around the state, featured collections on the front page, and a blog with bimonthly articles.

Collections are listed under Browse with a retro Kodachrome-slide feel, encouraging users to scroll through and skim the sample images. Visit the Contributors page to see all of the institutions participating in New York Heritage, and click on any organization's name to find out more about their collections.
2011 Best State Websites From Family Tree Magazine
Trace your ancestors from sea to shining sea with these 75 great state websites
Some of the most useful records for genealogists are kept at the state level. State departments of health oversee birth, marriage and death records, and state archives and historical societies have taken the lead in preserving newspapers, county records, state censuses and more. Many of these repositories have digitized all or part of their holdings, so you don’t have to send a request to a distant office or travel across the country to access Great-grandma’s birth certificate.

In selecting this year's best state websites for genealogy, we were on the lookout for databases where you can look for a relative's name. Many of the 75 sites (at least one per state) have indexes, and in many cases, you can even view images of original records. We salute the efforts of these state archives, historical societies and genealogical societies--and even a few ambitions individuals--for making genealogical and historical information available online.
